Hangxiety: Why Drinking Fuels Anxiety

Hangxiety is the wave of dread, guilt, and jitteriness that hits the morning after drinking, and it is not a character flaw or an overactive conscience. It is a predictable neurochemical rebound. Alcohol pushes your brain toward calm while you drink, and once it clears, the brain swings hard the other way. The result is anxiety that can feel worse than anything you were trying to quiet with a glass in the first place.

If you have ever woken at 4 a.m. with a racing heart and a running list of everything you might have said wrong, you already know the feeling. Here is what is actually happening under the hood, and what genuinely breaks the loop.

The See-Saw: GABA and Glutamate

Your brain runs on a balance between two opposing chemical signals. GABA is the main calming, inhibitory signal, the one that quiets neurons and lets you relax. Glutamate is the main exciting, stimulating signal, the one that wakes neurons up. In a steady state, the two sit on a see-saw in rough balance.
